The Senate's Constitutional Officers

The Inauguration—Vice-President Wheeler Taking the Oath of Office in the Senate Chamber.

According to the U.S. Constitution, "The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate." The Constitution further provides, "The Senate shall chuse their other Officers, and also a president pro tempore." In choosing its officers, the Senate modeled the offices of the secretary, the sergeant at arms, and the chaplain after the positions established by the Continental Congress.
