Senate Gavel

At the start of each daily session, a Senate page places a mahogany box containing two hour-glass-shaped solid ivory gavels on the presiding officer’s desk. The older gavel, in use since the 19th century, splintered during a heated debate in 1954. The government of India presented the Senate with a replacement, duplicating the original object with the addition of a floral band carved around its center.
