Nesmith / OF FRANKLIN, N.H. / April 8th, 1880; and (below the silver head) Wood from the Old Oak, on / which Daniel Webster / hung his scythe, when a boy / on his Fathers farm, Sallsburg / now Franklin, N.H.

This walking stick, along with another wood cane (cat. no. 79.00009.001), were given to the United States Senate in 1994 by decedents of Isaac Bassett, a Senate employee from 1831 to 1895.
